Nitong weekend lang ay inireklamo ng batikang singer-songwriter na si Gary Granada, sa pamamagitan ng isang Podcast, ang pagsasamantala sa kanya ng GMA. Hindi po siya minolestya, kundi ang talento po niya. Heto po, straight from the Gary’s mouth:

Heto na nga’t agad na sinunggaban ng blogosphere ang naturang kaso at ikinalat ang recording ni Gary Granada at pinuna o kinondena ang pagnanakaw, or otherwise a violation, ng intelektwal na pag-aari ng isang batikang kompositor–ang pinaka-inaasahang anggulo ng pagsipat sa isyung ito. Kung totoo nga ang naging paglabag ng GMA sa intelektwal na pag-aari ni Gary Granada, pinatunayan lang na bago ka maging pirata ay dapat may malaki kang barko. Kaya sa mga record companies, mukhang dapat nilang pag-isipang muli nang mabuti ang kanilang Anti-Piracy Campaign, na sa ngayon ay nakatutok lang sa pagtugis sa mga baklad.
Kung totoo nga ang reklamo, may mas matimbang na moralidad na dapat itinuturo sa kabataan kaysa magpatuloy sa pag-aaral. Tulad ng pagbili ng “tripid packs,” ito ay ang pagtitipid. At all costs. Iyon ang mas mahalagang mensahe sa patalastas na kinomisyon kay Ka Gary. Oha, may practical application pa!

Kasi nagkataong pare-pareho lang ang gamit nilang pormyula sa pambubukol sa kaban ng bayan, baka nagka-gayahan.
Dumarating na ang masamang epekto ng global financial crisis sa ating bansa. Lahat masasalanta, kasama na ang mga higanteng mass media companies. Ka Gary, kaysa naman maraming media workers ang ma-layoff, huwag ka na lang maningil. Nakatulong ka pa sa ordinaryong manggagawa.

Di nga, peksman. Itong isyu ng diumano’y paglabag ng GMA sa intelektwal na pag-aari ni Ka Gary ay higit pa roon. Pagpapakita lang ito ng kung papaanong, unti-unti at lalong umiigting ngayon panahong ito ng krisis, ang mga creative-cultural artifacts gaya ng musika ay higit na magiging commodified. Hindi dahil sa lalong bebenta ang mga iyon, kundi lalong titipirin. Hanggang sa maging freebie na lang, kung tutuusin.

Again, again, again. Ang punto rito, sa mga taong nangangarap na magkaroon ng marangal na kabuhayan sa pamamagitan ng paglikha ng musika (kasama na marahil ako roon, pagkatapos nitong kasalukuyan kong proyekto), kailangang mag-ingat na hindi kayo mapagsamantalahan. Sa mga taong tulad ko rin siguro na nais lang mag-share ng kanilang malikhaing gawain, lalo na sa pamamagitan ng internet, kailangan ding mag-ingat nang sa gayon ay hindi pagkakitaan ng iba ang hindi ninyo pinagkakakitaan o ayaw ninyong pagkakitaan. Hi Pete, di ako masyado fan ni Paulo Coelho (or rather, di ko pa siya nababasa), but I would agree with him on his stand that Internet is free. And not only that — information is free. And cultural artifacts too (like music), because their sources are free. Free, not in the sense of monetary value but in its nature of transferability and universality. Yes, here’s a copyleftist.

The thing is, within the framework of information ownership (copyright) that values are imputed to cultural artifacts and creative work, the rights and welfare of the creative worker should be protected and the use of their work should be amply compensated.
